about

A set of daydreams that form a miniature B-side to the album ‘Nights Bright Days’, this is a collection of six songs including the piano ballad ‘May’ and the dream-folk synth/harp reverie for the oldest tree in Kew Gardens ‘Old Tree, Mon Coeur’ that garnered Chloë Soundclouder of the Day earlier in 2014 ‘Dreamy voice… A magical atmospheric song’.

The new songs on this EP include ‘Ballooniad’ inspired by tales of the early Balloonists lifting off from coastal cliffs, a dreamily buoyant track tethered to a circling bass and ‘Big Tree Engine’ a  minimalist reflection centred around deep jazz-inflected piano chords inspired by an ancient tree in central London.

Track Name: Until
I can’t begin
Until I return

The flickering fires at my feet
Light up the street and the glances of desire
My boy slips away

The warmest dark
Swallows my heart
My boy slips away
Never seen again

Beautiful city within
I can’t begin

Until I return
Track Name: Engines and Orchards
Sun burning morning
The grass has turned to yellow straw
The earth is dry dust full of hidden thorns
Makes my feet sore
But I make my own way

To the overgrown orchard
Bindweed in curious shapes
In the deep shade, the rusty edge of a door
Engines, held together with vines
With my small hands I can repair what I find

Sleeping afternoon
Black oil on my skin
The bees suck the golden glue
And no-one can feed on me
Everything here is under my rule

In the overgrown orchard
Bindweed in curious shapes
In the deep shade, the shine of copper and chrome
Engines, coming out from the vines
My ingenious devices ready to find
Track Name: Ballooniad
We’d been waiting for the right day for weeks
Weighed down by our plans
By our doubt
But here it is
The perfect evening
And here we are

Under a cloud
In a silk shroud
About to rise

The cliffs are leaving us
The sea silver far below
And the air is hilarious to us
I don’t know quite how we got here
But here we are

Under a cloud
In a silk shroud
About to rise

Let’s throw out all the heavy stuff

Let’s go higher
Let’s follow the golden moon
Track Name: Big Tree Engine
Big tree engine
In the middle of the city
Slowly turning us around

Big leaves
Deep roots

Gently turning us around

Back to the ground

In our lethal dream
Track Name: May
She waits here
Year after year
Hoping this time
It will be different
Soon everything will change

But year after year
On the first of May
In the hour before the day breaks
Her heart aches
For the borders and boundaries
He used to bring

All this energy put into love
It’s the only thing she believes in
Soon he’ll see
And everything will change
Everything about her will be new
In the hours before the day breaks
As she looks into his face

He sees the wine on the table
The white lilies
The earth she moved her hands through

Soon
Soon everything will change
Track Name: Old Tree, Mon Coeur
Mon coeur
Mon coeur

I want to honour you
I want to
But how can I?

All you’ve seen and all you’ve heard
You’ve seen it all

Don’t you feel it all?

So old

What have you seen?

My heart
